Wonder Woman Costume Tutorial

Diana Prince is my favourite DC Super Hero, so I obviously had to cosplay her! I love that she embodies strength, justice, love and independence.

I wanted to create a Wonder Woman costume build in time for the cosplay convention ConBravo in Hamilton. It was June 21 2017, the convention was on July 28th. I had just over a month to make the costume, I knew with a little hard work and determination I could make it in time. *Fingers crossed*

I got to work immediately! I watched as many cosplay related tutorials I could find. I watched many other tutorials about worbla and eva foam (because I knew those were the materials I wanted to work with). Once I purchased all the materials I needed, I started crafting. It was my first time working with worbla so I was excited but nervous.

After multiple glue gun burns I managed to finish the costume on July 27th, the night before the convention! I was internally ecstatic to finally finish the costume and of course to become Wonder Woman! I wore the costume with pride and even managed to make front page of the Hamilton Spectator! It was a rewarding and exciting cosplay adventure I will never forget! To find out how I made the costume scroll below.

HOW TO GUIDE:

I thought it would be helpful to take photos and videos along the journey, so anyone else who decides to cosplay Wonder Woman will have a better idea where to start. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

Foam
Worbla (optional)
Glue gun and/or Contact Cement Glue
Heat gun
Dremel (optional)
Masking Tape
Scissors
Exacto Knife
Plasti Dip
Acrylic Paint
Spray Paint

I started with the tiara, arm bracelet and belt. I drew the designs on paper, then cut them out and traced the outer edges of the patterns onto the 2mm eva foam. I cut the pieces out of the foam and used a glue gun to layer the pieces of foam on top of each other. I then cut out two slightly larger pieces (in the same shape) of black worbla to sandwich the foam. I heated the worbla pieces, placing one under the foam and the other on top. Using my fingers and a card I pushed down on the outline of foam and while the worbla was still warm I shaped them into the desired look before it hardened. I will explain how I primed and painted these items further down in the blog.

Next I began on the corset/breast piece. Using yoga mat foam I created the base of the corset, I used this type of foam because it is thicker and more durable. The boobie cups were made out of worbla, I covered the pieces over a ball to shape/form them. I glued the worbla boobie cups to the foam mat corset base.

Now onto the details. I wrapped my torso in cling film and then masking tape, once fully covered, I drew the base panel outline of the corset lines (referencing pictures online) to the tape for a pattern. After drawing the look I wanted for the corset, I cut the tape off myself and wrote numbers onto the pieces. Using the base shapes I created as a template, I replicated the shapes onto EVA foam sheet. I glued the 2mm eva foam onto the yoga mat corset base. Then using 2mm eva foam covered in worbla I made the decorative breast piece onto of the corset/boobie cups.

In the back of the corset I added eyelets holes for lacing up the eva foam corset. Be sure to reinforce the back panels with craft foam.

PRIMING AND PAINTING:

I coated the foam and worbla pieces outside with black plasti dip spray (2 to 3 times) and let it dry. Plasti dip is a sealer and a primer, it's easy to use and I really loved the results! It's light weight and adds a nice shine.

I spray painted the pieces gold and used masking tape to cover any parts of the items I didn't want to be sprayed painted gold. I spray painted the pieces with 1 to 2 coats and let dry.

I then used acrylic paint to add the other colours and details to the armour pieces.

The skirt was made out of 2mm eva foam. I bought a pair of boxer shorts to glue the foam pieces with velcro onto the shorts. This way it was easy to put the skirt together and be able to take off. To give the foam a worn texture, I scrunched up tinfoil and flattened it on top of the foam. Using an iron on a light setting I pressed down onto the tinfoil to give the foam a weathered look. Then added more shading with darker acrylic paint.
